How to choose the hotel for you? How does the grading system work? For starters, hotels in France are graded according to a government-run star system, and the maximum number of stars given is four, although there are now also a number of independent ratings agencies such as AAA and Apartments in Paris.
With the government-run system, the number of stars relates to the amenities offered, such as an ensuite bathroom, not the quality, so don’t assume that three stars is the equivalent of a three-star hotel. You should always check what is offered - standards do differ across the country and if a proper shower is a must, make sure your chosen hotel doesn’t have just a bath with a hand-held attachment (popular in smaller hotels).
