Le Relais de Saint Preuil - luxury in Cognac country
Kick off your shoes and relax in this luxury guest house situated in the heart of Grande Champagne, the most prestigious cognac grape-growing region of the Poitou-Charentes – known as France’s Tuscany for the landscape of mellow stone buildings and fields of grapes.
Le Relais de Saint Preuil is a former 17th and 18th century coaching inn that has been beautifully renovated and now offers five superb rooms, including a family suite, and three apartments, all decorated to a luxurious finish. Each room is equipped with satellite TV, a DVD player, hi-fi, safe box and hair dryer. There is free broadband access in all rooms and apartments.
After a day out sightseeing, you can return to relax in the large swimming pool (heated when the weather is cooler) and sauna, enjoy a game of tennis or work off all the eating and drinking in the gym. Mountain bikes are also available so you can cycle amongst the vineyards and woods that surround the property.
The owners are English-speaking and have a wealth of information about the area. They can make appointments for their guests at local producers, some of which are within walking distance of the guesthouse – so no need to worry about driving after a cognac tasting! The guesthouse also offers fully guided cognac tours. You can also choose from a series of packages that include cognac tasting, golf and a romantic getaway. 
Le Relais de Saint Preuil also offers table d’hote on reservation so you can enjoy a delicious meal bursting with local flavours. For those wanting to arrange a large gathering, Le Relais de Saint Preuil has an attractive reception room that seats up to 40 people (see picture, above right)
The luxury guesthouse is a member of the ‘Chateaux & Hotels de France’ and has also been selected by CondéNast Johansens in their ‘Recommended Hotels & Spas Europe’ guide.
Rates: rooms range from €130-150 per night (from €90 with special rates - contact the hotel). Apartments are between €200-260 (€150-195 with special rates).
Breakfast is €15 for adults and €7.50 for a child.
