Le Couvent des Cordeliers - a restored monastery that combines history with elegance & comfort

For a real sense of French history Le Couvent des Cordeliers is the perfect play to stay. Originally founded in 1471 by Jean de la Rochefoucauld, Lord of Verteuil, it was home to Franciscan monks until the bloody events of the French Revolution when it was taken over by the revolutionaries and later sold as State property. In the 1920s it became a working farm; in the 1970s it was officially listed as a State protected Historical Monument. Now it is a beautifully restored chambre d'hôtes de Prestige and fine dining restaurant.

On the banks of the Charente river, it is set in gorgeous walled grounds with a courtyard garden filled with roses and a decked terrace arranged around a roman-style pool and fountain.

Inside, the mood is relaxed elegance. Choose from four luxuriously decorated rooms all of which have either a bath tub or walk-in shower. Enjoy those little luxuries that make a real difference  - complimentary bath robes,  flat screen satellite TV, free wifi,  Nespresso coffee machines and a CD player or ipod docking station.

A continental breakfast of freshly baked bread and patisseries, fruit, cereal, eggs, yoghurt, a delicatessen plate and selection of cheeses is served in the dining room that was once the monk's refectory and still has its original fireplace and authentic wall drawings.

In the evening, enjoy delicious French cuisine  -  chef Michel Olivier offers an  à la carte menu with dishes such as seared duck breast with sweet potato puree, carrot crumble, baby vegetables, blueberry jus and for dessert, passion fruit creme brulée with coconut sorbet (booking advisable).

During the summer months the courtyard terrace overlooking the river is open for drinks, lunch, full English cream teas and dinner. In the autumn, Le Couvent library is open for drinks, lunches, pre-dinner drinks and private dining.

Within the grounds of Le Couvent des Cordeliers is the church of St François and Chapel of St Giles which makes a wonderfully intimate wedding venue.
