La Porte Rouge bed & breakfast in Saintes
Sit in the garden of La Porte Rouge and above you is the steeple of Saintes' splendid cathedral. Breathe in the perfumed air, scented by flowers and aromatic herbs, the latter used in the meals prepared by this characterful bed and breakfast in the heart of the Saintes.
The Red Door Inn, as it is called in English, is in a townhouse that straddles the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and is full of charm. Yet it is also up-to-date, with contemporary touches such as Philippe Stark bathware and WIFI in every room.
All the bedrooms have king-sized beds, made up with Italian satin cotton sheets, and ensuite bathrooms. They do not have a television but there is a large flat-screen TV in the lounge.
In the library, browse through the 500 French and English cookbooks collected by your hosts, Jim and Monique.
At breakfast, served in the garden weather permitting, enjoy freshly squeezed orange juice and homemade jams.
Table d'hôte can be served with 24 hours notice, and thematic stays can be arranged including visits to artist studios, stone cutting workshops and a guided our of the nearby farmers' market.
Rates include breakfast. The room with a 160cm long bed with an ensuite bathroom that has a shower attachment and a toilet is €75 for one and €80 for two people. The room with two single beds with the bathroom - a bath with a shower attachment and toilet - on the landing is €65 and €70 for two people.
